Understanding Acne
Types of Acne
Acne can lead to more serious skin problems. It may develop when excess oil within the pores combines with impurities and causes blockage. When the immune system responds by sending white blood cells to the affected area, redness, swelling and pain may occur. If acne is not managed appropriately and in a timely manner, scarring may result.
Acne lesions may also worsen as a result of squeezing or picking. The pressure caused by squeezing can force the contents deeper into the surrounding skin tissue, potentially aggravating the condition.
Severe acne can damage deeper layers of the skin and may result in persistent pigmentation, uneven skin texture, pitted scars and permanent scarring, which can affect a person’s confidence. In addition to the face, acne may also affect other areas of the body, including the chest, back and upper arms.
