Side Effects Information
Why does Oratane cause side effects?
Like all medicines, Oratane may cause side effects.
The severity of side effects may range from mild to more serious, although many side effects can be managed.
Who may experience side effects?
People taking Oratane may experience different types and degrees of side effects.
The severity varies from person to person, and not everyone will experience all of the side effects listed on this website.
Some people may experience only one or two mild side effects.
For advice on managing treatment-related skin dryness and other effects, please refer to the Skin Care Information section.
What are the common side effects?
Some side effects may occur before acne begins to improve.
When treatment begins, acne may initially worsen. This does not necessarily mean that Oratane is ineffective.
Continue taking the prescribed dose unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
One of the most common side effects of Oratane is dry skin.
Because Oratane reduces sebaceous gland activity, the skin may become drier and more sensitive.
You may also experience:
- Dry or cracked lips
- Facial redness
- Peeling skin
- Dryness inside the nose
- Dry eyes
Dryness inside the nose may cause discomfort and, in some cases, nosebleeds.
Dry eyes may be particularly inconvenient for people who wear contact lenses or work in air-conditioned environments. Lubricating eye drops may help keep the eyes moist.
Your skin may also become more sensitive to sunlight during Oratane treatment. Use sunscreen daily, wear sunglasses and avoid prolonged exposure to strong sunlight.
What other side effects may occur?
The following effects are less common.
Some people may experience joint and muscle stiffness or discomfort. If you plan to undertake intensive exercise while taking Oratane, discuss this with your doctor.
Other uncommon side effects may include:
- Skin infections, particularly around the fingernails or toenails
- Peeling of the palms and soles
- Bleeding gums
- Headache
- Blurred vision
- Dizziness
- Weight loss
- Diarrhoea
- Irregular menstrual periods
- Hair thinning
- Changes in mood or depression
If you feel unusually unhappy or depressed after taking Oratane, tell your doctor immediately.
Many treatment-related side effects improve after Oratane is stopped.
The most serious risk is fetal harm if pregnancy occurs during Oratane treatment.
For further information, please refer to the Pregnancy Information section.
When should I tell my doctor?
Contact your doctor immediately if:
- You are unable to tolerate the side effects
- You experience any unusual or uncommon side effects
- You feel unusually unhappy or depressed
Your doctor may need to adjust your dose.
When do side effects go away?
Because many side effects are related to Oratane treatment, they generally improve after treatment has ended.
Where can I get more help and information?
If you have any questions or concerns about side effects while taking Oratane, consult your doctor.
